Keyboards 2_When to say When

If it’s a good thing is it too much? Ever wake up with a hang-over?

A lot of keyboard players do after a mix. It's an age old question of life in general micro-morphed into an aural presentation; …Is what I’m doing constructive or destructive?  A simple question, it is however one filled with a complex battle being waged between feelings and reason, emotion and logic for a clearer understanding of the facts before us.

Perception is our reality, we negotiate the facts.

You wrote and performed the keyboard part in the song you just mixed; you perceive it as the best organ sound you’ve ever achieved on several levels. The audience member in you has to negotiate with your artistic self that the organ in fact should be lower in the mix than the lead vocal during the verses.

It is difficult to know when good is actually great. Back in the early days of synth’s, like the Oberheim, Chamberlayne and Moog you could pass great with the turn of a knob and never find your way back.

Not much has changed in that today. If you’re not constantly hitting the “Save” button you are walking on an electronic tight rope over a sea of data eating alligators. One small power glitch and your hard work is toast.

Keys provide the majority of emotional content in an aural production. It can require more than one to create the whole desired effect. The 60-70’s band Three Dog Night brought in Skip “The Wizard” to help Jimmy “Spooner” beef up their sound. Was that addition Constructive or Destructive to their cause?
You choose:

As in all aspects of life down the rabbit hole …your time there will be filled with hypothetical propositions. Keyboards will provide you with a fair amount of them.
