Be the Show …Focus
Village Recording, Santa Monica CA. |
Survival is
a hard desire to beat. From keeping our bodies alive to ideas we've created, our instinctive desire to survive is intense.
If your intent is to capture the musical performance of another ...you’re going to need to
focus yourself on someone other than you for a while.
We metaphorically
live in a bottle called us. Everyone outside of our bottle sees us for who we are. We need to
look through a bunch of muck we've created during our lives to even see that the bottle we live in exist, yet
alone ...it has a label.
It’s a label others read clearly but it is in reverse from your
side of the glass. Once you clean up your muck you gain the ability to see through your bottle more clearly, reading and understanding the label others have seen forever.
That is
called enlightenment, and it is then you realize that you yourself, yes you,
actually write the label others see. Cool, you are now on the path to surviving in the music business.
When you provide
a clear path for yourself to walk on it becomes easy to help others realize
their dreams or ideas.
That is the basic job of a recording engineer. It's more than a
person who understands how to use big loud toys/tools. It's a
person who uses their well-balanced self to help capture and deliver the musical dreams of
others.
Once committed
to the show the question of focus for all participants deepens to:
…is this idea
(part) we’re working on constructive or destructive to the show? Objectivity is
the path to finding that answer. Objectivity is what the Sorcerer's Apprentice lost grasp of.
It’s music,
its art.
Music, more than anything else, is living proof that:
“Quality is an intrinsic
event”.
