Be the Show
The sun is setting; the waves are crashing upon the beach of the Sea of Cortez.
I sit here typing, listening to the warm sounds of the Mexican night thinking, wow, what a show. It is so perfect that there is nothing I could add to it.
There are those of us who view the show and those of us who are the show. The show lives within and all around me but only when my soul is calmed and full of hope for the day ahead does the unicorn appear.
Chris Ballew of the band 'Presidents of the United States' said into the microphone, while deep into the groove of one of his hit songs, “oh boy, we’re touching the unicorn now”.
Chris touching the Unicorn
History and the future all blend perfectly together in moments of magic. Most of them come to us audio types on the heels of some sort of aural stimulation. What was yesterday or gonna do tomorrow fade into the background of the magical moment. That is why it is difficult for me to pre-choose what microphone's I'll put on drums until the drums arrive and I hear the drummer play them.
Shoot ...all I can see at this time is the blinding light coming off my laptop's screen. My words to you seem to appear by magic. It's the magic being created by this place and time ...by a pickup truck pulling their shrimp boat out of the Sea of Cortez. The trucks sounds dimming into the distance while its engine runs at full power to pull the large boat across the soft sand. All that's left after their gone is dark all around me and the easy crashing of waves upon the sand less than a football field away.
This setting, this vibe is the show. It is why I have No F-king Idea of what I am going to do in the recording studio before I do it. How can I possibly know what the show needs until the unicorn arrives?
Just relax and be the show. It's what our audience pays us for.
You can't be the show if your busy fighting it.
Remember Zen Master Glassman's advice:
Row, row, row your boat gently down the stream ...
